Bitumen
Bitumen, also known as asphalt, is a black, viscous, and sticky material derived from crude oil refining or obtained naturally. It is primarily used in road construction, waterproofing, and roofing due to its adhesive and water-resistant properties.
Types of Bitumen
Paving Grade Bitumen:
- Used in road construction and maintenance.
- Classified by penetration grades (e.g., 60/70, 80/100).
Modified Bitumen:
- Enhanced with polymers or additives for improved performance.
- Common types include Polymer Modified Bitumen (PMB) and Crumb Rubber Modified Bitumen (CRMB).
Cutback Bitumen:
- Bitumen diluted with a solvent to lower viscosity for cold applications.
Emulsified Bitumen:
- Bitumen dispersed in water for use in cold and wet conditions.
Industrial Grade Bitumen:
- Used in waterproofing, insulation, and industrial applications.
Natural Bitumen:
- Found in deposits such as tar sands; also known as asphaltite.
